About this course

This course connects geology to economics. It opens with the theory of strategic planning and pit optimisation: resources and reserves, the Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm, slopes, block value calculation, commodity price, costs, recovery and dilution. You then prepare a Surpac block model for Whittle (rock codes, grades, density, slope regions, costs and adjustment factors) and export the mod and par files. In Whittle you validate the import, reblock, generate pit shells, analyse them with operational scenarios and spider graphs, build schedules with Milawa, and export the results back to Surpac for reporting and pit design.

What you'll learn
  • Explain strategic planning, pit optimisation theory and how block values are calculated
  • Prepare and validate a Surpac block model with slopes, costs, MCAFs and PCAFs for Whittle
  • Generate and analyse nested pit shells, operational scenarios and sensitivities
  • Select pushbacks and build schedules with Milawa, and report the results
  • Export shells and schedules (DXF, res, msq) to Surpac and use them for reporting and pit design
