About this course

This course introduces learners to the use of Whittle for preliminary open-pit optimisation of polymetallic deposits. Using a sample project containing multiple valuable elements, learners will explore how changes in mining costs, processing costs, metallurgical recovery, selling prices, and revenue factors influence the generation of nested pit shells. The course progresses from running an existing Whittle project and examining its outputs to modifying slope parameters, reviewing operational scenarios, and evaluating alternative pushback sequences. Learners will also examine schedule graphs and bench-level outputs to understand how mining tonnages, cash flows, NPV, internal rate of return (IRR), and life-of-mine indicators support strategic mine planning decisions.

What you'll learn
  • Navigate an existing Whittle project and understand the purpose of its main analysis nodes.
  • Run a complete optimisation project and examine reports, messages, outputs, and graphs.
  • Modify pit slope profiles and understand how changes affect optimisation results.
  • Adjust mining costs, element-specific processing costs, processing recovery, and metal selling prices.
  • Configure revenue factors and generate nested pit shells under different economic assumptions.
  • Visualise and compare pit shells using the 3D Viewer.
  • Configure operational scenarios with changing costs, capital expenditure, discount rates, and processing limits.
  • Interpret pit-by-pit graphs to compare NPV, IRR, ore and waste tonnages, and alternative pit shells.
  • Define and evaluate alternative pushback sequences using manual or automatic pushback selection.
  • Examine schedule graphs to understand yearly mining tonnages, cash flows, NPV, IRR, and life-of-mine results.
  • Configure bench schedule outputs to examine total material mined and tonnages by rock type.
  • Understand how changes to economic assumptions and scheduling parameters influence preliminary open-pit optimisation results.
