About this course

This course introduces the application of Whittle in open-pit gold mine planning and optimisation. Using a practical gold deposit example, learners will explore the workflow from importing and validating a block model to configuring pit slopes, mining costs, processing parameters, and gold prices. The course demonstrates how to generate and examine nested pit shells, assess the effects of economic assumptions, and use pit-by-pit analysis to support final pit selection. Learners will also be introduced to sensitivity analysis and the development of practical pushbacks, providing a foundation for understanding the role of strategic optimisation in open-pit mine planning.

What you'll learn
  • Create a Whittle project and import a compatible gold block model.
  • Validate block model dimensions, tonnages, and gold content against a reference report.
  • Configure pit slope profiles and slope regions for optimisation.
  • Define mining costs, mining cost adjustment factors, processing costs, recovery factors, and gold selling prices.
  • Examine optimisation outputs and visualise pit shells in the 3D Viewer.
  • Configure operational scenarios, including capital costs, discount rates, and mining and processing limits.
  • Interpret pit-by-pit graphs to evaluate pit shells using economic indicators such as net present value (NPV).
  • Understand how sensitivity analysis can be used to examine the influence of key economic and operational assumptions.
  • Understand the process of selecting a final pit and developing practical pushbacks.
